Got a lot of work done on the price since I've last posted. Just sharing the progress. I still need to attach foam on table, pour the glitter resin, and attach the nodes into it. They are firing now so I'm excited to pull them out Monday morning. Then I need to make the body and dress for octoboy. Things are coming along quickly. Need to be finished by end of June for the work exchange show at The Clay Studio.<br />

Been a while since I posted last. In the last two months I've been quite distracted. Started working at the Ceramic Shop full time, got two peices into the Our Community show at The Clay Studio and applied for the Graduate program at Ohio State. Getting nervous waiting for their response.<br />

Here are some of the new slides I had taken of some recent work. Hoping to get back into making. I signed up to take a mold making class this coming spring session at the clay studio, and in April I have a group show in Baltimore at The Brickhaus Art Space, and the work exchange show in June. Gotta keep chugging.<br />

The Clay Studio: Blue & White Workshop

Today I had the privileged of taking the Blue and White workshop at The Clay Studio. We had several demos today. Throwing large vessels, throwing off the hump, and using cobalt pigment to create designs on bisque ware. Instructing today was Seigoh Maeda, Makoto Saeda, and Kunio Watanabe.<br />

The workshop started with a breif introduction and then moved into demos. I watched the Kunio Wanatabe throwing off the hump demo. He only used two tools, one of which was a simple rib tool he had made and the other was a more complicated "dragonfly" tool. The dragonfly measures the depth and width of the intorior of a pot. He used the rib to form and compress the interior of the cups.<br />

He threw left handed (with the wheel going clockwise) as is standard in Japan, but was still a little nervous about using new clay, on a new wheel, and in front of a couple dozen people. He was throwing a lot wetter than I would, and he even commented on how difficult it was getting to work with, but I think that is because he was using a new clay body( 257 at The Clay Studio is a weird one).</div>

We then moved on into the hand-building room where Makoto Saeda demonstrated decorating using the cobalt pigment as a decorative under glaze. </div>

<li>He started by drawing a simple design on the plate in pencil. He then used a paper towel to wipe off some of the excess graphite so it doesn't create a resist for the lines he were about to draw. </li>
<li>He took a small sumi ink brush and created outlines and descriptive marks on the form he was drawing. He then took the mechanical pencil and drew lines around the shapes where he wanted colors. This created a resist barrier that would stop the water and cobalt pigment from running over the edges.</li>
<li>Taking a large brush, he soaked it in the the cobalt solution, and then the tip into some water. This would allow him to create a gradient, by painting with the water and then slowly squeezing the cobalt pigment out of the brush. He moved from Dark to Light pigments, saying it allowed him to visualize the final product more easily.</li>
<li>Going back into the drawing with a razor, a pin/needle tool, and even an eraser allowed him to bring out some highlights.</li>

He worked really smoothly, but admitted he still considers himself a student. He created a beautiful drawing of fruits and leaves (some sort of Japanese mango). I ended up creating a portrait of sorts using the techniques he showed. I was happy wit how much I finished in the hour and a half we had to work. I'm hoping to purchase a smaller sumi ink brush so I can be more detailed. I need to practice much more before I can start on the Golden series.</div>

Jessica Stoller: The Grotesque Girlie

As a work exchange at The Clay Studio,I volunteer to work first fridays and other events around the studio. This past first friday I noticed the work of Jessica Stoller in particular. A graduate from The Cranbrook Academy of Art, whose recent work is pointedly sarcastic. Her beautifully crafted work is captivating for it's level of detail, and then for its ability to comicly poke at gender roles and stereotypes. The work utilizes its size, process, and materials to it's advantage. The intimate scale of the objects, draws the viewer in, and creates awe at the level of detail in the lace(created by saturating the real lace in slip and burning out the fabric). Even her process of using molds , china painting, and lustering relates back to her concept of women in gender roles, as they are all associated with womens roles in the ceramic production process of the past. The work talks about ideals of feminity and the damage of which they cause.<br />

</div><div>After seeing her recent body of work, I was curious if she had always worked on the intimate level of the figurine. I made my way over to her website and found she had experimented with many medias and sizes. Stollers creative and innovative use of material is most interesting. In some works, which look almost dessert like, she uses actual frosting and candy as a material. She plays with a different idea of the feminine, using toys, mythical creatures, and puts them in sets in which they are actors. Skeletons of unicorns, my little ponies, and laserjet printed wallpaper, in all sorts of designs and pastel colors. She takes gender associated colors, objects, and themes and turns them into perverted and sarcastic renditions of their former selves. Ponies eating the flesh of dead animals, Unicorns vainly checking themselves out in mirrors, and what appear to be my little pony orgies.</div><div><br />

I think what draws me to it is the way she uses shapes and colors to creat a almost superflat landscape using mixed ceramic, mdf, and painted elements. The way the forms are layered on top of one another, almost mockingly phallic. They appear to be ceramic molds of tampons, and other feminine products arranged in patters with hearts and pastel colors around them. Its both formally apealling and apalling, but Jessica Stoller's work seems to be all about contridictions, expectations, and the interactions between them.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: none; color: black;"><br />

Thats right<b>, IM MOVING TO PHILLY! </b><br /><br>I applied last minute/short notice an open spot in the work exchange program for <b>The Clay Studio</b><b><b><b><b><i><i><i> </i></i></i></b></b></b></b><b><b><b><b><i><i><i><b>and they actually said yes!</b></i></i></i></b></b></b></b><br /><br>I am so thankful for the oportunity to get to travel a bit more, and to be able to take the next step in my life as a professional artist at such an epic program. I owe big thanks (and a 6pk) to emily for informing me about the program and the opening, and big thanks to the everyone who has helped and supported me!<br />
