The Berdaches

The Berdaches is officially the title of my new body of work. My work focuses on boundaries, created or real, and the spaces they inhabit. In particular my work focuses on the barriers we create between fantasy and reality, and between the genders male and female. I attempt to deconstruct these boundaries by reorganizing animals, various objects, and their parts to create new species and in a sense a middle ground. I use craft materials for their ability to make an object more homely, and while my color sensibility and mash-ups lend an otherworldly feeling, hopefully it all leads the viewer to the uncanny.

COLOR!

And the black glaze (not visible) is just for the heads of my sculptures. Shazam.

Divisions.

once again i find my work once again about the line between one thing and another. after making doodle i have received many comments as to it being cute or creepy, which excites me, but the most important comment so far has been from my friend Youngshin. She brought up the important point of that each animal(poodle and deer) lives in different realm. One is domesticated and one is found almost exclusively in nature. it excites me most because it helps expose how natural it is for me to be drawn to the concept of created boundaries. it reassures me that my work, even if playful or explorative, is headed in the right direction and makes me even more exited to produce works. i started off seeing these just as experiments but now im getting to seeing them as pieces in their own right.

Finally ive gotten the studio cranking again and im messing around with the molds. My goal is to create one hybrid from the molds each day as well as just figure out all the molds. Im using johns low fire casting slip from ohio ceramic supply, and so far its working pretty well. Its definitely a stable slip. Its really plastic and it dries at a favorable rate, not too fast or slow. Just glad to be working again! Ill keep posting the creations!<br />

Progress. The Cleveland Clay Studio

The studio is getting a tad chaotic as the molds are now in stacks waiting to get categorized. Im finding myself slowly being drained of motivation to work. I have to suffer in a day job to pay to make work that i dont want to make. Craft deco squirrels and holiday kitsch to sell at markets isnt what i imagined doing after school, and every time someone asks if im working i just cringe. Im dissapointed in myself for not finding work in the arts but more so im embarassed. I hate being home, and now that i have a studio(although nice) i feel more stuck here. i need a clay community but alas it seems cleveland doesnt have much to offer except potters. <br /><br>My ambition now is to find a way to create a guild/artist group that promotes its members by being a resource of information on upcoming shows, markets, and conferences. It will pull resources from the artists involved to help fuel creation and innovation. We shall call it <b>the</b><b><b> cle</b></b><b>veland clay studio</b>. Who is with me?<br /><br>The cleveland clay studio will offer classes taught by resident artists, sell works by said artists, and become a gallery space for showing new work. <br /><br>This is just a proposition of course. Im going to need help.<br />
